There’s a lovely film called Now and Then. It’s one of those coming-of-age movies that didn’t turn out to be as entertaining as visiting a distant relative you don’t know in the nursing home of a Sunday. Rosie O’Donnell’s in it, and Melanie Griffith. Actually, it’s got quite a good cast. It’s about the friendship of four girls. Griffith and O’Donnell along with Demi Moore and Rita Wilson play them as adults (that’d be the ‘Now’ part, you see) and as children they’re portrayed by Gaby Hofmann, Thora Birch, Christina Ricci and Ashleigh Aston Moore (the ‘Then’ part). I was about to say something mean about Aston Moore being the only one never to be heard from again – but then I Googled her just to check and it turns out she died from a drug overdose last year, so A) it would probably be far more freaky to be hearing from her and B) RIP Ashleigh Aston Moore, the Chrissy character was always the one I identified with.
Straying from the point aside, there’s a bike-riding scene where the four girls are cycling along listening to the radio, and the song that plays is Knock Three Times. Just like Abba, it’s all happy, it’s deceptively happy in fact. At least when Sting sang Every Breath You Take there was no question over what he meant. Mr Tony Orlando completely couched his tendancies in nice sugary language….
Hey girl whatcha doin down there
dancing alone every night while I live right above you
Yes, because obviously it’s pure ridiculous that she
hasn’t thought to invite over the random occupant of
another apartment
i can hear your music playing
Ask her to turn it down
i can feel your body swaying
From a floor above? No you can’t
one floor below me you don’t even know me
I love you
I stalk
Oh my darlin
knock three times on the ceiling if you want me
How could she want you we’ve just established that she
doesn’t know you
twice on the pipe if the answer is no
Also, that’s a really inefficient method of communication.
Have you got a mobile?
oh my sweetness
*Knock knock knock*
means you’ll meet me in the hallway
No, that would be the rattling of her terrified heart.
Stop shadowing the poor girl’s every move.
twice on the pipe means you ain’t gonna show
Twice on the pipe means she’s humouring you out of terror
If you look out your window tonight
pulling the string with the note thats attached to my heart
Note = Barring Order
Read how many times I saw you
how in my silence i adored you
I’m psychotic. I actually watch CSI to get ideas.
and only in my dreams did that wall between us come apart
Yeah, I dream-sexed you. Mental rape, the only kind
they can’t do you for. /small victory
Ah no, not the small chubby child they introduced for comic relief and diversity cos the others were all so unrealistically attractive. Tell ya what she was lucky she wasn’t Chinese they wouldn’t've let her sing at the olympics either.
I love Now and Then!!! I was hoping when i saw the title it would be about that scene when they are cycling and listening to that.
And remember Devon Sawa was in it? And we were young too so it was appropriate to fancy him. The age of innocence!
@TingTing I always knew your first comment on my blog would be tasteful
@Emer It’s an amazing film, I’m seriously considering an amazon purchase!
